Review of trip in May 2003 to Jumby Bay.
I wish to first thank everyone with whom I had contact or who wrote a review in the past.
My wife and I, we are in our middle 50's went from Midwest to Puerto Rico overnight then on to Antigua did the same on the return. This was a great idea (I Think) as it made the flying much easier. Stayed at the Ritz in Puerto Rico-easy access, great service, nice casino (we lost), however the facility seemed worn. Yes there are airplanes taking off-did not bother us.
On to Jumby Bay,
Flew in, it took a long time to clear immigration, but customs was quick. Picked up by "taxi" arranged by the resort. Short trip to water, across water in good-sized boat, 10 minutes and some punch to Jumby Bay. Greeted by name at landing dock by Ass't manager (the boss had the afternoon off). Brief tour of the facility, a lunch and on to the room.
Couple of general comments.
The pictures are accurate on their website. The remodeling was excellent everything looked well maintained. There are no rooms on the beach but it is a very short walk 100 to 150 yards. We stayed in a 1-bed room suite it was great over looked the ocean, Pond House rooms looked fine with great view but the Rondovels looked dark and seemed farthest from the beach. Pictures are accurate on their website. Mosquitoes were no worse then at home but Antigua was in the middle of a drought. If it rains it is probably a different story. The Chef (always try to meet the chef) who we met at the manager's cocktail receiption takes great pride in his food (Asian fusion meets Caribbean) and the pastry/dessert chef was great. All meals were excellent. The house wine OK but not great. Beverage service was superb all top shelf brands available and included. Better wine may be purchased; it is pricey, as it has to be shipped into Antigua. Jumby Bay prides itself on service and it delivers exceptional service for the Caribbean. Best review summary----we will return.
Our general day
Up in the morning about 7:00 am. Shower and then to breakfast. Asked our name and then always addressed us by name. Great breakfast. Took walk and back to room change to bathing suit. To beach and the sun or shade. The lounge chairs were covered by custom sewn towels with an extra towel on each. Had nice "Tiki" cover for shade. Refreshment service on beach---they delivered. Read/sleep until lunch. Cover-up, then to lunch. Back to beach. Same as before. 3:30/4:00 back to room. Clean up and go to tea. Return to room take nap/relax. Go to bar at 7:00, dinner at 8:00 nightcap at 9:30. Then to bed-slept all night-wake up thinking it must be 5:00am finding out it is 7:00 and start all over. Changed routine one day and went to pool. It is relaxing and quiet.
Other
Had massage one afternoon-she is very very good. The soap, shampoo, towels, bedding were all top class. There was no television but a Bose CD player. I brought some of my own CDs. Nice walking paths. We left island one afternoon---toured Antigua----It is like many other islands-returned early. Only negative on Jumby Bay I did not think the concierge service was all that good. It is a quiet peaceful relaxing time. Jumby Bay separates itself from other resorts by style and service
Leaving Antigua
Nice airport, however, there are no x-ray machines so everything is opened and searched. Everyone sees your dirty laundry. Returning to Puerto Rico long walk to US immigration and US customs. Glad we stayed in Puerto Rico on our way back
Thanks to Kirk for this trip report ...
