This is a review of the Long Bay Hotel on Antigua.
I first discovered Long Bay when reading the Houghton Mifflin guide to the Best Places to Stay in the Caribbean. After contacting the hotel and being offered a great rate (which included breakfast and dinner daily)that was significantly less than their published rate, I booked a week-long vacation for my partner and me.
We visited during the off-season and felt as if we had the entire hotel and grounds to ourselves. Opting for an individual cottage rather than a regular hotel room, we were pleased with our expansive views from the deck that looked out over both the Caribbean and a large lagoon. The View House, where we stayed, had a one bedroom, a living area with convertible twin beds, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen that the owner stocked to our prearranged specifications.
The entire staff was delightful and friendly, always ready to offer suggestions for dining and sightseeing, or engage in conversations ranging from music to politics to local food preparations.
The beach was gorgeous and we felt as if we had it to ourselves. About 1/2 mile long, it is shared with only one other hotel at the opposite end. There were a few beach vendors who had permanent places to display their wares. As a result, you could approach them for jewelry, t-shirts, hair-braiding, or pottery rather than be inundated with constant interruptions while trying to read, nap, or just take in the sun.
The food at Long Bay was some of the best I've ever eaten in the Caribbean, and even though there were only a few guests staying while we were there, the chef made sure to change the menu every night so we could always try something new.
In short, it was the most relaxing vacation I've ever taken. I loved the laid-back, family-run atmosphere at Long Bay that offered as many or as few activities as I wanted, depending on my mood.
Thanks to Emily for this trip report ...
