For a fun-seeking family, the Columbus Aquapark, located along the highway between Playa Dorada and Sosua, rivals the watery diversions awaiting visitors along the north coast.
The charming village of Sosua is next with its totally unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere. Many would contend that Sosua's crescent-shaped beach hugged by a sheltering cove bracketed by Los Charamicos to the west and El Batey to the east is the country's most applauded beach.
Settled by Jewish refugees from Europe more than a half century ago, Sosua has remained popular with European visitors, and its streets are punctuated with casual European-style open-air restaurants, bars, and cafes. US travelers are now discoveriung Sosua, lured by the luxury accommodations at the new deluxe waterfront hotels that overlook Sosua Bay.
The Jazz Festival is set for Sosua in early October. Performers from the US and the Caribbean join Dominican jazz ensembles. The action takes place at the Amhsa Marina Casa Marina Beach amphitheater.
