My wife and I stayed at the Jack Tar Village in April 2003 for one week. This was our second visit to a resort in Puerto Plata (the first was to the Flamenco in the same complex as the Jack Tar).
I was told that Jack Tar Village is one of the oldest resorts in the area. It is on a huge piece of property and is nicely spaced out with all of the rooms only one or two floors high. A golf course fairway goes right through the complex. There are two pools, with the large one being near the main buildings. The second one is called the ‘Quiet Pool’ as it is a short distance away from all the activities and it is very private and small (with a pool bar). It actually has a deep end!
The beach is nice, but narrow in comparison to others. The ocean in this area is rather rough with continuous waves breaking onto the beach. Strong undertow.
There is a casino located on the property, which is great fun for those interested.
There are 3 specialty restaurants and one main buffet restaurant.
The food:
In the specialty restaurants, the food was top drawer. Special mention to the Caribbean Restaurant for evening dining. The daytime pizzeria had the best pizza I’ve ever eaten.
However, the food in the main buffet restaurant was a big disappointment for lunch and dinner... on every occasion that we ate there.
Pros:
:This is an adults only resort....
:Everything is kept neat, tidy and clean.
:All the staff are very friendly.... they really try to make you want to come back.
:The Quiet Pool with swim up bar was a definite plus
Cons:
:With the resort being old, the rooms are in real need of a makeover.
:The roof in the buffet restaurant leaked badly in places when it rained. Another roof in a common area also leaked.
:Poor food in the main buffet restaurant.
I really hope the above has been corrected since our visit.
We really liked Jack Tar and would love to return one day.
Thanks to John for this trip report ...
