I stayed at this hotel for two nights on a business trip to Santo Domingo in February 2007. Front desk staff friendly; upgraded me from a garden room to the tower. The room is typical of the Renaissance/Marriott genre - minibar, TV, king bed, large desk and large bathroom.
Casino busy at night even during the week, sports bar restaurant has acceptable food. Breakfast (included with the room price) was mediocre.
The location is excellent. Walking distance to the colonial zone (approximately 20 minutes) and situated right on the Malecon which is nice walk during the day. Do not walk this area at night as it is not safe especially if you are on your own.
The expensive (US$10/day, I believe) in-room wireless internet service was very unreliable; most times I was unable to access the network.
The other downside was that my credit card was compromised at the hotel. A number of fraudulent transactions were charged to the card resulting in phone calls to my credit card company, affidavits, etc.
Bottom line: Santo Domingo is highly recommended. The colonial zone is architecturally interesting (recommend the Basilica Menor de Santa Maria Cathedral built in 1514) and the town has that special feeling of a real working Caribbean town - warts and all. The Renaissance Jaragua is a well-priced hotel - but lacks generally for the business traveler.
Would I go back again? Yes, but I may also check out hotel options such as the close-by InterContinental and some of the accommodations in the Colonial zone.
Thanks to John for this trip report ...
