Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, Riviera Maya

February 2, 2002

We visited this resort for our Honeymoon. By far the nicest resort I've stayed at. Accomodations, staff and food are all top notch. Upon arrival we were greeted with Pina Coladas and checked in promptly. However, if you arrive before 2pm be prepared to wait for your room. This is no problem though, take some time to enjoy the lobby bar, explore the lush grounds, or do what we did -- take your swimsuit in your carry-on and hit the beach right away. I suggest getting locks for your suitcases--we noticed the bags sat in the lobby after being unloaded from the bus and were unattended at times.

The rooms were beautiful. We got a honeymoon upgrade and had rose petals on the bed, a fruit basket and bottle of champagne. Very clean rooms. You have to leave your room key in a slot on the wall to operate the A/C and lights. When you take it out as you leave the A/C shuts off. Here's a tip, it works with any card that has a magnetic strip. Leave your health card or something else in there and the room will still be cool when you come back.

The a la carte restaurants were great, but book your reservations as soon as you arrive, even if there is a line. We waited till the next day and the one restaurant was fully booked. Buffet is unbelievable. You will not be disappointed. Self-serve beer everywhere and even few Pina Colada/Daiquiri stands where you can add your own alcohol!

The beach is amazing. Clean, clear water, white sand. But take a big insulated cup, because if you want a litte privacy on the beach you'll be a long way from the bar.

Nightly entertainment is worth a visit too. Don't miss the Michael Jackson show--it may sound cheesy but it was great.

One tip--if you travel with Sunquest (or presumably any other major tour company) don't miss the "Welcome Briefing". It only takes 1/2 an hour, but we heard a horror story of a family that missed their flight because they read the board wrong and Sunquest did nothing because they had not attended the briefing--cost them an extra $4000 to get home.

All in all a great resort. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks to Justin for this trip report...
