Economy: Tourism is of growing importance to the region's economy. The incredibly diverse and
colorful reefs attract snorkelers and divers, and supply the white sand for the
Archipelago's beaches.
Traditionally, islanders made their living from small-scale fishing and agriculture.
However, in the 1950s San Andres received free port designation, which shifted the
economic base away from these traditional activities to commerce and tourism. These
industries are the principal sources of employment for non-native islanders, while native
islanders are primarily employed by the government and continue to conduct artisanal
fishing and traditional agriculture on a small scale.
