We went to Great Bay Beach Hotel in Philipsburg (Dutch Side) May 2001. Stayed in ocean view room, and enjoyed seeing the cruise ships coming and going across the bay. Hotel is well kept and rooms attended to, with fresh towels twice a day. Rooms are simple, ceramic floors, basic furniture, full bath.
Two pools available, one near bar, one up on a terrace and is less busy. Beach is semi-private and kept clean daily. Pleanty of beach chairs and umbrellas to go around. Some small paddle craft are free and motor water craft availble to rent ($100/hr?) Food is mostly buffet, with some menu choices for breakfast and lunch.
Main restaurant is open sided to the beach, very nice to sit and look out and warm breezes flow through. Meals were varied and never short of anything. Drinks of all types also pleantiful. Service was OK but staff seemed abit formal, and not over friendly.
Take the island tours and trip to Orient Beach included, well worth it. Philpsburg shopping is only 5 minute walk from hotel. Go in morning when cruise ships are in port. Cruisers seem to shop more in afternoon after sight seeing.
Thanks to Peter for this trip report ...
