I just returned from St. Maarten and, while the island itself is beautiful, I found the people there rather rude. Great Bay Beach Hotel and Casino doesn't seem to quite understand the meaning of the term "all inclusive". Everytime you walk into the restaurant you have to tell them what room number you are from. After that, the waiters and waitresses look at you as if you are an annoyance to them.
Everywhere you went within the hotel you were expected to tip for service (even though in most cases the service wasn't worth tipping for). If you didn't flash cash you didn't get service. If you went to the bar to get a drink and didn't put the tip into the tip glass while the bartender was looking, you didn't get any alcohol in your drink (unless you drank beer - then you were okay). Meals were served only during set times and if you were off on a day trip and arrived back at 4:30 in the afternoon, having missed breakfast and lunch at the restaurant they wouldn't even give you a small snack (or even the leftovers from lunch) to eat, you had to wait until dinner (which didn't begin until 7).
If you decide to go to St. Maarten for the view (and that is beautiful), I suggest that you bring lots of extra cash with you for tips (even if you go all inclusive), otherwise you'll be lucky if they'll give you a glass of water with your meal.
Thanks to R for this trip report ...
