Cayman Islands - Trip Reports

Spanish Bay Reef, Grand Cayman

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Spanish Bay Reef. It is a small resort, about 50 rooms, and we were under the impression that if we weren't divers, we'd be unhappy staying there. Not true. I won't regale you with our experiences as failed divers, but suffice it to say, we are both very happy to just snorkel, thank you very much, and it was a great resort for snorkeling as well as shore diving.

Our accommodations were good. We stayed in one of the rooms rather than one of the cottages closer to the water. Our room was spacious enough for our needs, but I probably would like to try out one of those cottages on our next trip. When we arrived, we were taken to a room on the second floor which happened to have a very noisy air conditioner. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and we were moved to a room on the first floor with much quieter air! All rooms have a patio or balcony, not very private, but fine.

I thought the food was great and so did my husband. All meals were buffet style, which I like very much. One important point: if there is something you would like but don't see, like ice cream for instance, you must ask...or you will never see it!

If you are looking for a resort with nightly entertainment, the Spanish Bay may not be the place for you. The bartender told us there is entertainment there on Saturday nights. We were there from Sunday through Thursday. Also, the Spanish Bay is not on the famous Seven Mile Beach as is its "sister" resort, The Beach Club. This was fine with us, as we were looking for a small resort with a relaxing atmosphere.

Jeeps are part of the package price at the Spanish Bay. You may use them on a shared basis, from 9 to noon or 1 to 4 PM. Very nice extra benefit not offered by any other all-inclusives we've been to, and we've been to quite a few. Please note this is not an advertisement for this Villa. I am just providing you with information on a great place to stay for a reasonable price. Feel free to mention to Ian or Janine that you read about SPLASH Villa on the Travel Newsgroup or Travel Board.

Thanks to Jeanne for this trip report ...
