Started our week with 2 nights in Havana Vieja. Hotel Plaza is recently restored and quite nice. I have stayed in Vedado in the past and much prefer the old city. Try to get a room on the interior as the streetside rooms can be noisy. We turned on the air conditioner to drown out the sound. On the third day we rented a car and drove west along the northern coastal road which is decent but not great. Beautiful drive though. We spent one night at Los Jazmines Hotel in Vinales. Spectacular but a bit pricey. I would do it again at any cost. Because it was raining we jumped in the car and drove further west to Maria la Gorda. This beach resort is as far west as one can drive in Cuba. Great beach and accomodations. Not fancy. About $31 per person per night included breakfast and dinner. Diving was great but fishing was not.
When we left we drove 4 hours to Soroa and stayed at Hotel Moka. Beautiful and pricey. I am not sure that I would go back there if it were not for the outstanding artists that live in the village. If you do go be sure to find the Lester Studio and the orchid painter. 2 of the best artists that we found in Cuba. Lester will be moving to Havana soon.
All in all the western region of Pinar del Rio is the most beautiful landscapes that I have found in Cuba
Thanks to Austin for this trip report ...
