Cuba - Trip Reports

Breezes Jibacoa

March 23 - 30

Overall rating for resort = 8.5 out of 10

Good Things:

- good activities staff
- excellent close to the resort tours
- comfortable, clean
- away from Varadero
- close to Havana

Improvement Areas:

- fix the bicycles! Almost no brakes
- stage entertainment gets pretty routine after a few days
- BIGGER glasses for drinks. At least they should sell a "Breezes Jibacoa" cup or mug on your first day so that you can re-use it (probably better for the environment too)
- better commmunication to new guests about where to find activity boards, who to talk to, where to get things, etc.

Recommendations:

- take a Moped tour, particularly the ones that visit nearby farms - inexpensive and excellent (to me the Mopeds are really reasonably safe they can't go faster than 50km/hr with two people)
- snorkel! Its easy and this beach is right on a coral reef
- Scuba lessons are great too
- don't bother with the expensive Havana city tours; share a cab with another couple and do your own site seeing. Havana is safe and the tour doesn't go anywhere fun. Tour a cigar factory, go to the outdoor market, hang out in Old Havana.
- go on the resort tour to a baseball game in Havana (almost every Sat. during the season); Cubans love baseball and you'll see it when you go there
- take the quick hike at 9am for a great view
- book your reservation for the Italian restaurant at the same time as when you check-in
- a lot of people reserve for the Cuban restaurant too so probably should reserve a time there at check-in as well
- bring a decent sized cup that you won't be embarrassed carrying around with you on the beach/pool! This seems strange, but you'll be glad you did

Couple other interesting notes:

- liquor and coffee are definitely more expensive at the hotel than they are off the resort; if you get into Havana or elsewhere there's a grocery store - buy liquor and coffee there for almost half the price
- introduce yourself to Roberto early on and find out what tours he's got planned over the next week

Thanks to Mark for this trip report ...
