Cuba - Trip Reports

Breezes Jibacoa, near Varadero Beach

Just got back from Jibacoa on Wednesday.

A few comments and pointers.

Resort is new but everything is operational. The grounds, rooms and facilities are spotlessly clean

Weather on gulf coast of Cuba can be cool, 17-20C after sun goes down, so you will need jacket or sweater. During the day it will be from 22 to 28 but there is ALWAYS a breeze. Two weeks ago there was a 'norther' where the daytime temperature rarely got above 20, that is very unusual.

Everything is included! Five bars for about 450 guests are never too busy. Premium brand liquor is served. Food was very good. The main restaurant is self serve, with waiters serving drinks and clearing tables. It always has a huge selection. The Italian restaurant is by reservation only and is a little more formal, not jacket and tie but long pants and shirts with collar.

The best eats are in the small taverna which serves native Cuban fare. It is a good place to meet people as all tables seat 8 and you will be seated with others. There is full table service. Ignore the rules and offer a small tip after dinner (2-3$us)

Tips are not expected and are frowned upon within the resort. However...

The day trips are excellent. Ttwo to four trips are available from the front desk for a cost of four to six dollars. This is a great way to discover Cuba. Your tour operator will try to sell you larger side trips for substantially more. Some are well worth the price. The trip to Havana is a must. If you can then get it with the night club visit. Jungle trip is OK and is an opportunity to visit Varadero beach where most of the tourists go.

Car rental is available at the resort but is rather expensive. Now that I know the lay of the land I would rent a car rather than taking the tours.

Suprisingly few people went in the water. It was cool but just fine for snorkeling without wet suit. Best spot is directly out from the beach bar. We brought our own gear, but loaners are available at no charge.

My wife had a massage, and recommends it. Book a time early as it is usually fully booked for a few days.

The only money you will need is US dollars. Bring lots of ones and fives. there is very little shopping in Cuba. The stores in the resort have run, cigars, beachgear and toiletries. For souvineers you must go to Havana or Varadero.

Topless sunbathing is allowed but not common.

Thanks to Charlie for this trip report ...
