Just returned from a two week vacation, April 4-17 at Melia Cayo Coco. We had an absolutely amazing time. The staff is the best we have ever seen (this being our 8th trip South). The staff is very friendly and did everything possible to make our stay pleasant.
Resort - The resort is laid out very well. Although, there are only 270 rooms, the resort is quite large and private. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and are maintained by very friendly gardeners. The reception lobby is beautiful and very comfortable. We usually enjoy walking around after supper; however, this vacation we spent a fair amount of time sipping drinks in the lobby area, as it was so inviting. The lagoon billiards bar is also very nice and includes an exceptional bartender named Orlando. We saw only a few mosquitoes during our stay (never a problem).
Rooms - We had a lagoon room, which was very nice. We watched the sunrise every morning from our balcony and could see the sunset from our boardwalk. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable. There are two firm beds, which are very comfortable. The in room safe has a keypad, which you program, so you don't have to worry about loosing a key.
Food and Drink - The food was great. Breakfast is served at the buffet. Lunch is available at the buffet, pool bar and beach grill. Dinner is served at the buffet and in three a la carte restaurants (Cuban, French and Italian). Reservations are required for the a la carte restaurants. We were able to enjoy the a la carte restaurants as often as we liked. Drinks are plentiful and include selected International brands. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and serve a wide variety of cocktails. We especially liked the Mojitos served by Orlando at the billiards bar.
Staff - "Alex the Great from Cuba" and the other entertainment staff are very friendly and put on very professional nightly shows. They work very long hours but always seem to be smiling (True Happy Faces)! The a la carte and buffet restaurant staff is very professional and always provide excellent service. Yamil was especially gracious; he always made us feel special.
Activities - The resort offers a wide range of activities, everything from horse back riding at the beach to sailing, paddle boats, fishing on the lagoon, bicycles, tennis, beach volley ball, billiards, outdoor bowling, shuffle board, ping pong, skeet shooting, archery, yoga, Spanish lessons, aerobics, etc. The animation team has a full day of activities around the pool and games area. We went on one excursion to the town of Moron. This full day trip included free time in the downtown area, horse and buggy tour of the town, a visit to a crocodile farm, quick tour of a sugar cane factory, train ride through the countryside, and boat ride through a mangrove. This excursion is highly recommended.
Pool - Although, we didn't spend a lot of time around the pool, it is quite large and very beautiful. In comparison to other resorts we have visited, the pool area is quiet and relaxing. There are plenty of lounge chairs and shady spots around the pool.
Beach - WE LOVE THE BEACH. The beach is quite large and beautiful. We were able to go for long strolls in either direction. The sand is golden white and the ocean is a beautiful aqua colour. We never had a problem finding a shady spot on the beach. The beach bartender always made sure you were not thirsty.
Wildlife - During our two week stay, we saw a wide variety of animal life. There were three pelicans constantly feeding along the seashore. We were lucky enough to see two dolphins swimming some 100 feet from the shore. The resort includes many birds, including very friendly black birds and humming birds. The lagoon includes many fish, which like to be fed on occasion.
Conclusion - We are planning to return to MCC next year, which will be a first for us. We always like trying different resorts, but there is something special about MCC. You will have to go to see for yourself to understand what we are saying. We highly recommend MCC, as we loved it.
Thanks to Carol for this trip report ...
