Dominican Republic - Trip Reports

Sun Village Beach Resort

Just returned from a glorious week in the sunshine at Sun Village Beach Resort. After having some good reviews and some really bad reviews, I was a little nervous.

We had an absolutely fabulous time there. Yes, there are plenty of steps, but that did not bother me in the least. The service staff was extremely friendly, most spoke English, and were always willing to help. The beach at the resort is nice, but on the small side. The pools were wonderful. We laid in the sun every day at the Oasis pool.

The delux room was nice, and our mini-bar was restocked every day. We sought out the conciegerge (Kelvin was his name) to take a day trip to Cabarete, Sosua, and Playa Grande, and he set us up with a driver for the full day for $75.00 USD. The driver (Modesto) was a perfect gentleman and took us wherever we wanted to go, stopping anywhere we wanted along the way. I highly reccommend this!!!

The food however was hit or miss. The thai restaurant was really good, as was the Mexican restaurant on the beach. Ovation was o.k. The buffet was good for a nice high carb meals, as I avoided most of the meats, as they looked unappitizing, and I heard, (and met), some people who had gotten sick from eating chicken on the buffet. This is really the only negative thing I have to say about the resort food. We did go out of the resort to Le Papillon restaurant across the street, and this is a whole other story. The "fillet mignon" was less than adequate and the Lobster my friend had came out raw the first time. Wouldn't reccommend going there.

To conclude, I had a great time, and I would definately go back. I was told repeatedly before I went that I should not go there for the food. Having this mindset I had no high expectations and when I did have a good meal, it was like an added bonus.

Thanks to Chris for this trip report ...
