We were 4 guys traveling around Panama the 3rd week of January, 2004,
on a budget. We loved Panama, BTW, and generally found a hotel
everywhere we went for from $25 -> $50 per double.
Our one splurge, the Melia Panama Canal, on Gatun Lake near Colon
was a big disappointment. $88 per double, expensive restaurant with
poor food.
Here's a link: http://centralamerica.com/panama/hotel/melia.htm
We stayed there thinking it would be fun to watch boats pass on the
Panama Canal. That's the gyp, our mistake was booking based on the
name... you cannot see the Canal from the hotel, despite its
misleading name. You can rent boats or take boat rides from the
hotel's dock [we didn't] but found that even in that case there is no
connection to the part of Gatun Lake which makes up part of the canal
- we were told there is some sort of barrier which intentionally
prevents that.
Panama is otherwise recommended, nice people, safer than some other
Latin American countries as evidenced by the lack of barbed/razor wire
around buildings, prices about 70% of New Jersey on the average, the
Spanish spoken there is not heavily accented as it is in cuba, Chile,
Argentina.
Thanks to QE for this trip report ...
