Barbados - General Information

Capital: Bridgetown

Climate: Barbados has an average daytime high of 75 - 85ºF. The nights are usually slightly cooler. The prevailing northeast tradewinds blow steadily so that although it is bright and sunny, it is not unbearably hot. The rain usually comes in quick showers. The dry season lasts from January to June. Hurricanes usually avoid Barbados

ATMs are available at banks, shopping centres and other convenient locations. Credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs will even give you a cash advance with your major credit card (these advances will be in BDS$).

Banks are open Monday through Friday. You may find a supermarket branch open in the morning on Saturdays, and the airport offers bank service seven days a week while planes are flying.

Electricity: 110 volts, 60 cycles, as in the US. Many hotels provide adapters for 220-volt appliances from other countries.

Official Language: English.

Political Status: Parliamentary democracy .

Population: 259,191 (July 1999 est.).

Time: Eastern Standard Time from October to April, i.e. same time zone as the US East coast. Barbados does not operate Daylight-Saving time.
